After installing the July Infrastructure Updates for MOSS, our server has been having issues with the Directory Management Service.

We originally set up Incoming E-Mail on the MOSS server using the SharePoint Directory Management Service for creating groups in Active Directory. This has been working perfectly in conjunction with our Exchange 2007 server and we’ve been managing group memberships through MOSS web interface.

Unfortunately it seems the WSS Infrastructure Update has broken this functionality. Now when approving the creation of Distribution Groups, the group itself is created and the email address is attached, however the users are never added to the group in Active Directory.

Adding a user to the SharePoint Group results in the following error when the Directory Service tries to make the change in Active Directory (see below for a log file extract) :
The Directory Management Service has reported an error which is not recognized by Windows SharePoint Services.

No other changes have been made to the system, or to the permissions or structure of Active Directory.

I have been able to recreate this scenario in the same network environment using a development VM – creating Distribution Groups works fine until the WSS Infrastructure Update is loaded.

    Anyone else experienced this problem?

I have also experienced this error (and continue to experience it). Also, when I attempt to delete a distribution group in Central Administration, the status just goes to pending, instead of being deleted. Have you heard of any updates/fixes for these problems?

  3. Andrew says:

Our site has also experienced this problem.

Sharepoint can create the distribution group in the Active Directory OU, but can not add or delete members and throws the following error:

“The Directory Management Service has reported an error which is not recognized by Windows SharePoint Services”

We have verified the permissions for the admin application pool account which controls the OU, and all other email enabled lists are still working correctly.

Finally I found the solution for this problem,
